Beyond Reason (BR) are four guys from who love writing and performing their own brand of modern high-energy rock. Bryn (vocals, guitar), Keef (guitar, background vocals), Jason (bass) and Scott (drums) came together in October 2010 over a plate of pasta…
"To be honest, I don't really know how the hell I ended up sharing a stage with these guys!" laughs Keef when pressed on how he got together with Bryn, Jason and Scott (or Guns as he’s affectionately known to the rest of the band) "I’d been performing with other bands and, more recently Scott, when life got in the way. Our old singer had the opportunity to start afresh in a completely new part of the world and, quite rightly, took that opportunity. It left everything in limbo and I think there was an unspoken feeling that, well, that was that". And, for nearly 6 months, that WAS it. Keef continued "Although Scott and I continued to stay in touch we weren't hopeful of getting anything sorted in short order. I think Scott even started looking around for other opportunities, which I was gutted about because great rock drummers (of which he definitely is) are in short supply". Recording plans went on hold. Live shows that were lined up were cancelled. And rehearsals and song writing sessions were swiftly moved to the "maybe later" file. And then Jason appeared on the radar through a musician’s website. "I'd seen an advert placed online, listened to some rough demos and liked what I heard" says the bassist. "I made a phone call, spoke to Keef and, at that time, they were still without a front man. So we left it at the “let’s stay in touch and see what happens stage". Effectively it was limbo again until the final piece of the puzzle fell into place". And that final piece was Bryn Lucas.
"I think Keef finds it quite spooky how I got his details because, to this day, he maintains that he has NEVER advertised for a front man!" says Bryn "But it was obviously just one of those lucky occurrences that I stumbled across an online ad." So after another phone call, and with Jason and Bryn now showing interest, a hastily arranged dinner meeting was organised at Keefs place in order for everyone to meet up and ensure that they weren't going to kill each other at the first rehearsal. Musical influences were discussed and it was decided that, at the very least, everyone would give it a couple of rehearsals to see how it felt.
In 2011 the band moved quickly to establish a continued series of live appearances, with favourite London venues such as The Water Rats and The Bowery becoming almost their second homes. A debut single, the anthemic Coming Around Again, was recorded during the summer of2011 and released at the tail end of September. And for 2012?
“I’m more excited about this band than I’ve ever been” comments Bryn. “Everything just seems to be right. The right line-up. The right songs. And the right attitude of everyone involved. We know that when people come to see us play they’re spending their hard earned money on getting in, so we owe it to them to be the best that we can be.” Even though they’ve only been on the scene for a year, Beyond Reason work hard at their art. They deliver a show that puts a smile on the face of the audience, and they deliver songs that you can sing-along to after the house lights have gone up. And in this age of austerity and manufactured XYZ-Factor pop puppets, that’s a refreshing thing to experience.
